Sun Life Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships 2013

It is a serious competition
Organised chaos
Plenty of teams dressed to impress...Where's Wally?

Even a little bit of rain didn't deter the crowds or competitors

Tesco now sponsors The Dark Side

Luke Skywalker and Han Solo

Yes there was plenty of racing
...
...

...and a giant inflatable Panda

I found him

Only one road in and out of Stanley so it was a little busy...and yes I got on the wrong bus home...again

A great and colourful day out, a great atmosphere. It was good to see competitors getting into the spirit of the day and representations from local and international teams.

Trail 2: Hong Kong Parkview - Violet Hill - The Twins - Stanley

Hong Kong Parkview - Violet Hill - The Twins - Stanley
6th June 2013
3 Hours 45mins

Comments: Note to self, please see comments from Trail 1. I left at 11.45 and the temperature was HOT!!!

The Route
Google Maps

Heading up to Violet hill I passed a warning sign "please do not attempt this trail unless you are an experienced hiker, have the right equipment (and should say "you are physically fit")...more on that later.

The route was fairly steep leading away from Parkview and reasonably shaded in parts and on reaching the summit of violet hill I was feeling a little confident about today's trek. I had read a number of online posts regarding this walk and many mentioned 軟足 "Softened Legs", I was feeling fine, on reflection, this was an error.

Over Violet Hill were some fantastic views out to sea and many of the outlying islands but more importantly I saw "The Twins" way off in the distance and I could just make out the path heading up.

The path descends into Tsin Shui Wan Au. At this point you do have to option to head towards Tia Tam Reservoir or Repulse Bay or continue on. In my usual spirit I headed up the first of the 1000 steps.

Note: I did not count them, they are not numbered up, and it felt like they were never going to end.

WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT IN HIGH TEMPERATURES OR IF YOU ARE UNFIT.

This was tough....very tough!!!

I reached the top of the first peak only to realise that I had to descend in order to climb the second of the twins.

The descent from the second peak was straight forward but by this point I had run out of water my legs were not happy with me.

I made it to the end of the trail and was very pleased to see a bus stop on the other side of the road. I needed air conditioning, water and a seat. I was soaked in my own sweat (not a pleasant image) and physically exhausted.

Maybe a slightly easier one next time.

Trail 1: Hong Kong Parkview - Jardine's Lookout - Mount Butler

04 June 2013
1h 45min
1h 15min Return

Comments: Note to self, do not set off at 1pm, it was far too hot and I was the only one on the trail. I did notice a few more people heading up at about 3-4pm when it was considerably cooler. Jardines Lookout was worth the climb!!

Me at about halfway

Fantastic view from Jardines Lookout, looking back at Hong Kong Parkview and beyond

Looking over the other direction to Causeway Bay and Kowloon

and finally looking down on Tai Tam Reservoir

One Way Ticket

Standing at Heathrow T5 waiting to board the plane to Hong Kong this is the start of my adventure as a member of a growing community of male trailing spouses.

I was thinking about air travel and the hierarchy it creates. As a reasonably frequent traveller (for both business and pleasure) and I have reached the dizzy heights of BA Executive bronze...which, as far as I can see, offers no benefits apart from making you want to strive for silver!!!

However, travelling with the wife can be both more and less stressful at the same time. Firstly, she is a BA Gold card holder and she achieved this mainly by flying economy (so a huge amount of flights).

When travelling with a Gold card holder it is like you have married into the aristocracy. Suddenly, you can walk straight up to the first class check-in desk, use the lounge, fast-track through security and board the plane when you want (even if you are flying economy).

I am not use to this, and get uncomfortable at the sideways glances you get from your fellow travellers who have to queue. Furthermore, as a frequent traveller she knows all the shortcuts, how late to leave it to check in and go to the gate, even when the screen says “now boarding” this is only a suggestion to the wife.

The less stressful part is that I can be "dumped" in the Lounge, surrounded by free food and drink, magazines and papers under the watchful eye of the BA staff whilst the wife does a bit of shopping. This is a perfectly amicable agreement as I hate shopping and the wife hates taking me shopping.

Well back to the flight, I'm travelling on my own this time so arrived at the gate with plenty of time. It is a fairly full flight and there are a significant number of middle aged men in red Rugby shirts heading off to support the Lions in their first game in Hong Kong. More on that later.
